Charlie Leonelli holds a seat on the school board, but he has not run for election. He was appointed to fill Seat G this spring after board member Sharon McConnell resigned, citing family and personal reasons.
Since Leonelli was appointed to fill a seat, he must run in the first available race to maintain the seat. Instead of running for his appointed seat, which only has one year remaining on its term, Leonelli decided to run for a full term by seeking the seat that board president Kristina Brophy is vacating.
Leonelli has two sons. His youngest is in pre-kindergarten, while his older son attends third grade at Weller Elementary School. Prior to joining the school board, Leonelli said he was an active parent at Weller, often accompanying his son’s class on field trips and spending time volunteering in the classroom.
Leonelli moved to Fairbanks in high school and attributes much of his success to his education in Fairbanks borough schools. He has lived in the area continuously since moving here.
